In 1961 the Soviet Union put the world’s first man in space, Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin. He was followed only weeks later by American Astronaut Alan Shepard. In 1965, the Soviet Union again scored a first when Cosmonaut Leorov became the first man to walk in space, beating American Astronaut Edward White by only weeks. But America achieved the ‘Ultimate Goal’ when on the 20th July 1969, Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon’s surface, with the historic statement heard live all over the world, ‘The Eagle has landed’.
