Running first and second this made an ominous sight at the head of the pack. Th Mobile Holden Racing Team's luck changed when Lowndes race ended disastrously. He hit the wall out of Castrol Curve on lap 38 while passing a backmarker. Their team mates race also ended when Skaife pitted on lap 52 with terminal engine problems. Not the end they hoped for.
